How to get an SIA License

To work in the Security Industry as a licensed door staff or some other positions, you’ll need to have a valid SIA License as well as the ability and capabilities required in the role. Some roles, such as CCTV require more training and some experience before diving into the deep end, but in general companies will get you up to speed on what you need to know and do in the role.

If you do not currently hold a license, the steps are quite straight forward and usually completed in a timely manner. The SIA website has a very good info graphic that also explains the process, see it here.

Personal Documents and Details

As with most applications for any form of ID, you will need to provide information and relevant ID documents to prove that you are who you say you are. They will also need to perform some criminality checks, age and rights to work in the UK before you will be eligible for the license. This is a standard procedure you will find across most industries.

Training and Qualification

As the work and scope of work covered by private security operatives grows and continues to expand, so too does the professionalism and expectations of the staff. If you are looking for a job in the security sector, it is a requirement for front line license holders to undergo approved training programmes that will award you with a recognised qualification. Their purpose is to ensure that the individuals performing the roles are capable and will not be of harm to themselves or members of the public. The training usually covers the core areas of the role, not the full training any staff could possibly have.

Apply for the License

Firstly, it will set you back about £220 for a three-year license, with the exception of a front line vehicle immobiliser license where the fee is only for one year. Also, there is a 50% discount for a second license if you require more than one.

From there, you need to follow the steps outlined on the SIA website (click here) by signing up to the site online first, filling in the application online and then taking your finished form to any post office which provides the service.
