Recognised for: Spotting and intercepting an intruder during a routine CCTV check, before they could reach residents.

Each month we recognise a member of our security team whose professionalism and attention to detail set the standard for everyone else on site. This month’s spotlight goes to Door Supervisor M J Shah, stationed at Rest Up London, whose alertness recently stopped an unauthorised intruder from reaching residents inside the student accommodation.

Student accommodation sites like Rest Up London depend on a controlled, welcoming environment where residents feel safe coming and going at any hour. Much of a door supervisor’s value is invisible — the incidents that never escalate because someone was paying attention at the right moment. Officer Shah’s recent shift is a clear example of exactly that.

While carrying out a routine CCTV check of the perimeter, Officer Shah noticed movement near the gated fence line. Rather than dismissing it, he watched closely and identified an individual climbing over the gated fence and making their way onto the property. Recognising the behaviour as a potential security threat straight away, he moved to intercept before the person could get any closer to the building.

Officer Shah reached the individual before they could enter through the main door. Following correct access-control procedure, he calmly challenged the person and asked them to confirm whether they were a resident of the accommodation. When the individual could not verify their identity or give any legitimate reason for being on site, Officer Shah instructed them to leave the premises immediately.

The situation was resolved without confrontation, without disruption to residents, and without the intruder ever reaching a communal or private area. That outcome came down to three things: constant vigilance on the CCTV system, fast recognition of a genuine threat, and a controlled, professional intervention.

An intruder gaining access to student accommodation can lead to theft, property damage and — most importantly — a serious risk to resident wellbeing. By identifying the breach early through CCTV monitoring and acting before the individual could enter the building, Officer Shah closed the gap between detection and response that intruders rely on.
